Frequently asked question

Welcome to our FAQ section, where we aim to provide answers to some of the most common questions asked about Print Pilots

What is Print pilots?

Print pilots is the name of Egmont’s new print ordering website that will substitute the old system (EPP) and offer publishers an efficient solution for configuring, pricing, and ordering magazine printing.

What print jobs are managed in Print Pilots?

In Print Pilots we manage the printing of magazines and inserts such as cards, folders, brochures, and posters. Please note that the system only supports the printing of jobs that are within the Egmont Standard product program. Non-standard products are managed outside Print Pilots.

Why are we implementing a new system instead of EPP?

EPP is built on old technology that is no longer supported; it’s complex, and the data structure is very poor. The new system is running on new technology, and it’s a rules-based system that makes the system easy to use.

It also allows publishers to get a faster printing service, still having printing experts to help with the complex stuff. In the new system, data is managed in a structured way. This allows publisher, marketing, advertising and procurement to make better decisions, e.g., optimizing cost or reducing emissions.

What will change when we implement Print Pilots?

With Print Pilots, all aspects of the print ordering process are done on a website. Communication with the printing expert will also happen via the website, not e-mail or direct contact. It’s similar to online ordering flight tickets, kitchens, photo books, bikes, cars or computers.

Will Print Pilots mean that more work will move to the publisher?

No, the success criteria is that the publishers will have less work and better customer service. Normally, when you want to change a page number or know the price for an Insert, a Project Manager or supplier would need to be consulted. With Print Pilots, we have built in the complete rule set for how you can configure and print your specific magazine. In the future, go to Print Pilots, and the system will let you know if your wish can be met and provide the price of making the change.

Do we need to change working routines when Print Pilots is implemented?

Publishers who today manage information in EPP continue doing the same task, now just in a more modern system. Those who have had the Project Managers updating EPP must keep the information updated in Print Pilots. This is instead of sending e-mail and Excel.

How can I get support?

Print Pilots work similarly to other online services. In the Print Pilot help center, you can find a number of articles with the answer to the most frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer here, write directly to the printing expert using the built-in support feature. In urgent matters, call your local printing expert.

Can the new print management system calculate prices?

Absolutely. Print pilots are connected to a cost database. For each print job, a price is calculated, including the cost of transportation and markup. Changes to a print job are possible within predefined boundaries. The price is updated, e.g. when a page number is changed, or a printed insert is added to a magazine.

I need a price for a one-short magazine in a non-standard format – what do I do?

Price inquiries on non-standard or one-short magazines can be submitted via the support feature. When a price inquiry has been submitted, we will let you know it has been received, and the print buyer will let you know if we need more information. The duration of processing a price request depends on how complex the job is. Unless anything else has been agreed upon, the non-standard and one-time print orders will be offered at a single all-inclusive price. The prices will include markup and deadlines.
